SUMMARY:Geology Talk and Tour with Don MacPhail
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to have Don MacPhail return as a leader for a geology talk and tour along the Kennebecasis Valley. We’ll visit five sites along the way and have an easy to understand\, introductory lesson on the unique formations in our own area. \nThe limestone cliffs at the starting point are the oldest rocks – the oldest anything – in New Brunswick. Three further stops along the Kennebecasis Valley and a final stop on the Kingston Peninsula showcase the three main rock types that we were supposed to learn in school; igneous\, sedimentary and metamorphic. The rocks are pretty different when you really look at them and they were each formed in very different times in the Earth’s past. We will talk about what living things were on the planet during each of the geological eras and try to picture the situations that the rocks\, as we have learned to read them\, have told us about those times in the planet’s history. We will see an ancient carbon capture project\, the remains of a fast-flowing river system at the base of an ancient mountain range and a solidified pile of volcanic ash. As well\, we will see evidence of the “recent” Ice Age. And discus how rocks are dated. \nRecommended age: All ages \nMobility and accessibility: Easy with almost no walking. Parking is secure\, but traffic awareness is important especially for children who attend. \nThis event is for Nature Saint John members only. Become a member today!
