PLBO Reports: Friday May 8th (Morning & Afternoon)

Morning Report

From 7am to 11am

Weather: Clear weather, Beaufort (Bf) 3, Winds West, 5 to 8 Deg Celsius and seas Moderate. Tide Receding

During Counts:
Eastbound: 600 Birds Westbound: 38 Birds

Rest Period:
East 419  West 31

Total birds seen East 1019 West 69

Species observed over the bay:
Common Eider, Black Scoter, Surf Scoter, White-winged Scoter, Common Loon, Red-throated Loon,  Black Guillemot, American Herring Gull, Ring-billed Gull, Double-crested Cormorant, Northern Gannet, Razorbills, Black-legged Kittiwake, Canada Goose and Greater Black Backed Gull.

Parked: Common Eider (2), Common Loon (2), Double-crested Cormorant (2), Harlequin Duck (3), Black Scoter (10), Dark-winged Scoter (2),  and Razorbills  (22) 

Today was my final count, due to missing two days so I did counts back to back, the morning started off quiet but throughout the count we had small flocks of birds moving.   

2 Song Sparrow at the seed, the Tree Swallows increased in number, there were 8 birds competing for the house on the observatory were active diving for insects, we had a Female Northern Harrier fly low over the shore and skim over the sparrows. 


Afternoon Report

From 11am to 3pm

Weather: Clear with variable cloud cover, Beaufort (Bf) 4, Winds West, 9 Deg Celsius and seas Moderate, Tide Low (11:14) then Flooding.

During Counts:
Eastbound: 453 Birds Westbound: 37 Birds

Rest Period: East 385  West 21

Total birds seen East 838 West 58

Species observed over the bay:
Common Eider, Black Scoter, Surf Scoter, White-winged Scoter, Common Loon, Red-throated Loon,  Black Guillemot, American Herring Gull, Ring-billed Gull, Double-crested Cormorant, Northern Gannet, Razorbills, Common Murre and Greater Black Backed Gull.

Parked: Common Eider (2),  Common Loon (1), Double- Crested Cormorant (1)  Harlequin Duck (3), Black Scoter (48), Common Murre (1), Black Guillemot (3) and Razorbills (18) 

Today was my final count, due to missing two days so I did counts back to back, the afternoon was sporadic with what looked to be the same scoter numbers moving East, West, East, West.   

2 Song Sparrow at the seed, 8 Tree Swallows, we had a second Female Northern Harrier fly in from Grand Manan, she was a little lighter brown then the morning bird but gave us a good look as she sailed past us.
