Morning Report
A quiet day at the point, with Emily McCoy, Amanda Giovinazzo and Jim Wilson as observers. Clear sky, zero wind and receding tide made for a beautiful start to the day.
Total birds counted flying east 474, headed west 58.
Waterbird species counted: Common Loon, Common Eider, Red-br. Merganser, Black, Surf and White-winged scoters, Harlequin (1), Long-tailed Duck, Black Guillemot, Canada Goose, Razorbill, Common Murre, American Herring, Great Black-backed and Ring-billed gulls.
An immature Bald Eagle explored the calm waters off the tip of the Point and the fields and alders produced Black-capped Chickadee, Savannah and Song Sparrow, Hermit Thrush and Purple Finch. “Our” Tree Swallow pair are once again occupying the birdhouse erected on the east side of the building, and a pair of Song Sparrows spent the morning constructing their nest on the grassy edge of the shore a few meters west of the observatory building.
This was a beautiful way to end our 31st consecutive year of spring migration monitoring.
