Weekend Report for August 26 and 27, 2023

Saturday, August 26: 

  • Due to high winds and rain in the forecast, no beach visits were conducted.

Sunday, August 27:

  • Ashley Brown, Jan Lucy, Don Evans, and Andrew Miller were the volunteers today.  Hank Scarth was the leader.
  • 24 people were noted on the beach.  18 were engaged by the volunteers.  All yielded very positive interactions with enthusiastic feedback about the birds and the work of the volunteers. 
  • Ten dogs were noted with three unleashed.  The dog walkers leashed their pets when approached by the volunteers.
  • 116 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 15 Least Sandpipers, 62 Semipalmated Plovers and one Sanderling were recorded on the main beach.  Several small flocks of “peeps” totalling 193 birds overflew the beach but appeared to divert to other locations including Manawagonish Island, the eastern beaches and the marsh.
  • A Merlin overflew the main beach, one (or more) Ospreys were fishing close to shore as was a Red-throated Loon.
  • On the eastern portion of the beach, 21 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 27 Semipalmated Plovers, 4 Sanderlings, 1 Ruddy Turnstone and one Great Blue Heron were noted.
